Fire Door Inspection
Fire doors are specifically designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. A fire door inspection will ensure that your fire doors are in good working order, and able to do what they are supposed to do.
Following on from the Grenfell disaster, as of the 23rd January 2023, it is a legal requirement for the responsible persons of multi-occupied residential buildings over 11m to carry out regular checks of fire doors.
At Ablemarsh, our fire door assessors can help you comply with this legal requirement and ensure that if there is a fire it doesn’t spread.
Why is a fire door Inspection important?
A fire door inspection is not only important but an essential as part of your fire safety strategy. Fire doors buy you precious time and can be your last line of defence in the event of a fire.
A regular annual fire door inspection will help:
Maintain a building's fire safety management
Ensure the proper functioning of fire protection systems
Identify any issues or deficiencies with fire doors and allow for prompt corrective measures to be taken
All of this can minimise the risk of fire-related incidents and maximise occupant safety.
What happens during a fire door inspection?
A fire door inspection is the visual process carried out to assess the condition, functionality, and compliance of fire doors in a building. During a fire door inspection, a qualified inspector or fire safety professional will assess each fire door to ensure it meets the required UK fire safety regulations. Various fire door components are looked at, including:
Door condition: The overall condition of the fire door, including any signs of damage or wear that may affect its ability to function properly.
Door frame: The inspection of the door frame ensures that it is securely attached, properly aligned, and without any significant defects that could impact the door's operation.
Hardware and seals: Examination of hardware such as hinges, latches, locks and letter boxes to ensure they are in good working order. Glass, fire door smoke seals and gaskets around the door are also inspected to ensure they will meet fire safety guidelines and provide fire and smoke containment.
Clearances: We check your intumescent strips are correct and working, and that the clearances between the door and the frame, as well as the floor, meet the required standards for fire and smoke containment.
Closing and latching mechanism: The inspector checks if the door operates smoothly and closes properly. They verify that the door self-closes and latches correctly, ensuring it can effectively compartmentalise fire and smoke.
Fire door signage requirements: The inspector verifies that the fire door has the appropriate fire rating label or certification, which indicates the door's ability to withstand fire for a specified period of time. They also ensure that the door has proper signage, such as instructions for use during an emergency.
The inspection process may also involve documentation and record-keeping, noting the condition of each door, any deficiencies found, and any necessary corrective actions. If any issues are identified during the inspection, the responsible parties can then take action to address them, such as repairs, maintenance, or replacement of damaged components or the actual fire doors themselves.
How often should I have my fire door inspection completed?
An annual fire door inspection is essential to maintain the effectiveness of fire protection systems in buildings and ensure the safety of occupants.
At Ablemarsh we are able to carry out a fire door inspection for you. However, we understand that people are busy, and when working in an HMO or block of flats, that accessing all the flat doors during a fire door assessment can be challenging. Therefore, we offer our services on weekends, to assess as many doors as possible, giving you the best chance of staying safe. A competent person is responsible in assisting with a safe and healthy workplace, ensuring that everyone in the workplace is aware of their responsibilities with regards to health & safety.
The workplace should be safe for employees, customers, and visitors.
