What is a competent person? 

A competent person should have the necessary training, knowledge, and experience to recognise the hazards and risks in your business and be able to advise on safe systems of work to eliminate or reduce them to an acceptable level.

The level of competence required can vary depending on the activities being undertaken by the business. The advantage of having an external competent person allows for that skill set and knowledge to be available immediately.

 

How does the Law apply to your business? 

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999

7.—(1) Every employer shall, subject to paragraphs (6) and (7), appoint one or more competent persons to assist them in undertaking the measures they need to take to comply with the requirements and prohibitions imposed upon them by or under the relevant statutory provisions and by Part II of the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997.
